Oh Bloody Hail

It was another exciting Friday night at the Lee home. I had driven the Explorer to work on Friday because my car had a tire with a leak. Mike was going to take the car to the garage near his office to be repaired. On the way home, Mike calls and says its hailing in Kasson, so get home. I was five minutes from our driveway so I figured I would have no problem. Kasson is about 10 miles away.

Thirty seconds after I hung up the phone, the hail hit. It came down so hard, I had to pull over to the side of Highway 14. It started out as pea sized hail and quickly grew to marble sized. Before I knew it, it was the size of golf balls. It pelted the Explorer for ten minutes straight. I just sat there, knowing what this hail was doing to our truck. Madison and I were both terrified. I'm really surprised it didn't break the windshield. When it finally stopped, I drove to Mike's office on roads covered in three inches of ice. The car had been parked under the tree, so we thought it was relatively well protected.

I followed Mike home where we found piles of hail all over our yard. Our siding had holes in it, our deck had dents from the ice chunks, and chunks of asphalt from the roof were all over the place. We also found cracked siding and roof damage on the garage and all of the gutters.
Once the water dried off the truck, we started looking for damage. We didn't have to look hard. The entire hood and roof and dimpled with hundreds of dents. Both front quarter panels have large dents. The paint on the hood is very chipped up as is the front windshield. Friday night, the car didn't look so bad and we had only found a few major dents. By Saturday morning, when it had finally dried completely, we could see that the car was nearly as bad as the truck with damage to the hood, roof and trunk. The doors and front and rear quarter panels on the passenger side are also heavily damaged as is the windshield.

Now, there certainly are bigger problems in the world. The house and cars can be fixed and insurance will cover all of it except for the two thousand dollars in deductibles. (UGH!) It certainly is not the end of the world. It is, however, a bit disheartening. We have been working so hard on our home - it was really starting to come together to be a home that we loved. It's hard to see that damaged in just a few short minutes.

Our vehicles are fairly new - a 2005 Malibu and a 2004 Explorer. Malibu's are a dime a dozen and I'm not so concerned about that. But the Explorer, we are both very sad about. We wanted that truck for about two years before we broke down and bought it new. It doesn't have many miles on it and it still looked and smelled like a brand new SUV. We have both loved driving the Explorer and it is great for the activities we love, like camping and boating.
Many of our neighbors had damage as well. I feel so bad for my next door neighbor. All three of his cars received major damage, and he only had full coverage on one of them. He has been working so hard preparing for his daughter's graduation party that was today. I have watched him groom his lawn and plant flowers over the past few weeks - only to have all of his hard work wiped out in just a few minutes. The flowers no longer have petals - they just look like weeds now and his beautiful larger plants are just shredded. He wanted it to look so nice for his daughter's party.

The photos show the size of one hail ball. This photo was taken about two hours AFTER the storm and it is still larger than a marble. It was 70 degrees here at the time, so it definetely had opportunity to melt!

Our lawn was still covered in hail when we went to bed on Friday night.

So - we are hoping State Farm will send a disaster team to Rochester. Many people in our area sustained damage, especially to their cars. Hopefully, they aren't too busy in the Twin Cities area where tornados and baseball sized hail hit last weekend and where they were hit with storms again last night.

Guest Blogger, Madison

Hello! This is Madison posting with some very exciting news! A few weeks ago, Mommy and Daddy told me that Santa Claus is bringing me a baby brother or sister for Christmas! Isn't that exciting?
This baby is extra special because Mommy had to take special medicine to make it. Because of that, Mommy has already had three ultrasounds. The most recent one was today and the baby is starting to look more like a baby than a white blob! We are at nine weeks and two days.
Since I made things really tough on Mommy when I was born, we already know the new baby's birthday. It will be December 22, 2008, about one week earlier than the due date of December 28. Mommy and Daddy say it's a good thing because now we know we will get another tax deduction! I don't know what that means, but it must be good.
So far, everything is going well. Mommy feels really tired a lot of the time and she's pretty hungry too. That's okay cuz then I get lots of cookies and chocolate malts!

The weather man lies

The weather report said the weekend was going to be beautiful with highs in the 70's and a 50% chance of rain only on Sunday. A 50% chance of rain also means there is a 50% chance that it won't rain - so we thought it would be a wonderful weekend to enjoy the start of of another Minnesota summer.
I think I should become a weather forecaster. I know if I were wrong 50% of the time in my job, I'd get fired. Why does the weatherman still have a job?

Friday night was cool, but very nice. Saturday and Sunday were WINDY. Tents were blowing away and there was no hope of getting the boat in the water. The air off the water was so COLD! We spent Saturday and Sunday huddled around the campfire and bundled up! It rained briefly on Saturday night. The bad weather that parts of Minnesota and Iowa experienced on Sunday missed us, but it was still too cold to really enjoy the day. By Monday, we had enough and headed home early.

Despite the cool weather - we did enjoy ourselves. It was fun visiting with friends and relaxing away from the endless to-do list at home. For the first time, all of our fellow campers had kids. The twins, Kendall and Sydney enjoyed their first camping trip. Another set of twins, just a week younger than them visited on Saturday night. I swear, the child to adult ratio was easily 2 to 1!

Madison enjoyed the trip and each day learned to occupy herself more and more. She spent most of Sunday picking dandelions for me. It was so much fun because every few minutes she would come over with a big bunch in her sticky little hands and say, "Mommy! I picked these for you!"
She also enjoyed playing at the park. The slides are always her favorite.
She rode her trike up and down the road in front of our campsite.
She also enjoyed going in and out of the various pop-up campers that were part of our group. There was a small finger pinching incident that had me worried we were headed back to the ER in Rochester - but it healed quickly with no lasting effects.
There was also the naked two year old covered in soap running towards the street incident. I wish I had a picture. Madison was so dirty after playing in the dirt all day on Sunday, so I told her she was getting a shower. The camper we stayed in happened to have a little shower spigot on the outside, so I stripped her down and hosed her off. Right after I soaped her up, she decided she didn't want to take a shower and she darted straight towards the road. I screamed. I ran towards her and caught the slippery little bugger just before she reached the road. Thankfully, there were no cars coming but until I caught her, I didn't know that.
I think our group was probably the talk of the campground with the number of kids running around. They ranged in age from six months (the twins) to ten years old. If one kid wasn't crying, another was. All in all, it was a fun weekend to get away. Can't wait to do it again!

Time to go camping!!!

4 P.M. won't get here fast enough today! We are packing up and going camping for the long Holiday weekend. We can't wait to spend three whole days lounging on the boat and at the campsite!

Madison is most excited to roast marshmallows. I have a feeling I will be roasting a marshmallow for her before we even get unpacked.

Watch for pictures from our camping trip to be posted next week.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. Remember to take a moment to give thanks to those that have given the ultimate sacrifice in the name of liberty.

American Idol

Okay - so post in the comments who you think will win.

I'm hoping for David Cook. He rocks. David A is boring and sings the same stuff over and over again. Plus - I can't stand how he "dances" on stage.

Blog Marathon

I haven't posted much lately because I've been busy wrapping up another class towards my MBA. Now that it is done - I have a lot to catch up on! So, to round out today's blog marathon, I wanted to share an awesome recipe that I found.

I'm no foodie. I can't come up with recipes on my own. I do, however, really like to cook. I like to find recipes that use basic ingredients, are somewhat healthy, and are easy to cook and freeze. I like to stock my freezer up with home made frozen meals to make cooking during the week fast and easy. I do not require that my recipes be all natural ingredients or organic or anything like that - but I do like to make them as healthy as I can and as inexpensive as possible.

I came across a chicken noodle soup recipe a few weeks ago on Becky Higgin's blog. http://www.beckyhiggins.com/recipes/ For those of you that do not know Becky, she is an amazing scrapbooker and has a monthly sketch column in Creating Keepsakes magazine. She has written numerous books and has even designed a line of storage products with Lisa Bearnson. I follow her blog because I like the food she makes and I love her home decorating ideas.

Anyway, since tomorrow night is going to be busy for me, I decided to try Becky's chicken noodle soup recipe. I thought soup would be quick and easy, especially if I made it today! It only took a few minutes to throw the ingredients together - and they are all basic ingredients that you are likely to have in your pantry. Towards the end of the cooking time, I decided to have a little sample taste(s). YUMMY. It is very very good. I almost decided against eating the leftover chow mein (my favorite!) that Grandma made for me. Almost. Not much will stand up to Grandma's chow mein.

So - here it is. Give it a shot! This would be a great recipe to make up and put into individual serving gladware and freeze for lunches.

Becky Higgin’s CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP

2 chicken bouillon cubes (or 2 tsp. granules)
2 cans chicken broth
1 c. chopped carrots
2 c. chopped celery
1/4 c. chopped onion
1/2 can cream of chicken soup (I used 98% fat free)
1/4 c. milk
1/2 stick butter
1/4 c. flour
2 c. chopped cooked chicken (2 pieces)
4-6 oz. egg noodles

Boil chicken until fully cooked. Cook egg noodles. Dissolve 2 bouillon cubes in 1 cup boiling water. Add chicken broth and vegetables to the liquid until tender. In separate bowl, whisk 1/2 can cream of chicken soup and milk until smooth. Whisk soup and milk mixture into broth and vegetables. Melt butter then stir into flour. Add to soup mixture. Cook until veggies are soft (not mush!) Add chicken and noodles. Optional: Season to taste with salt & pepper or Schillings garlic & herb seasoning.

Enjoy!

Clean Car Sunday!

WOOHOOO! My car is FINALLY clean! I spent a few hours on Sunday afternoon getting the interior vacummed and washed. I scrubbed the upholstry. For some reason, the fabric on my seats is a magnet for stains! I do not even know where they come from, but it is always getting so dirty. I scrubbed it and the stains appear to be gone, for now.

I also used the high pressure hose on the floor mats. They were so dirty! I'm still not sure they came very clean as they were caked in dirt, mud, and salt from the winter roads. ICK. They are still drying on the deck so I hope they look better in the morning.

Finally, I washed the outside.

Now, it's shiny and looks new again. I love a clean car!

Oxbow Park

Today was a nice day - so Madison and I packed a picnic lunch and went to Oxbow Park. It's one of the those rare little gems that is perfect for a family outing. There are picnic areas, a nice creek, camp sites, hiking trails, and even a small zoo!

We found a nice grassy spot in the sun to enjoy our sandwiches, chocolate pudding, and craisins. Then we went to check out the animals in the zoo. It's a free zoo that accepts donations. The animals are all native to Minnesota. It is quaint with lots of open, grassy spaces in between the exhibits. It is usually packed with families, but its wide open enough that the little ones can run and burn off energy without disrupting other families.

Madison got to see a bald eagle, owls, goats, cows, chickens, turkeys, a porcupine, a hedgehog, a red fox, a bobcat, a cougar, a black bear, a gray wolf, and lots of other cool animals!

I brought along my camera and found quite a few spots to take some pictures of Madison. She was way more interested in the animals than the mamaratzi tho!!

Happy Feet

Ahhh. There isn't much better than a spa pedicure. It is so relaxing. It feels so nice and I don't have to be the one hunched over my feet trying to trim cuticles! I don't know how those ladies do it in the salon, but they hunch over other people's toes all day long! The girls in my old department at Mayo gave me a gift certificate for a pedicure when I left. I had been saving it for flip flop weather. The day before Mother's Day seemed like a perfect day to get my feet done.

It's so nice to have cute toes to match with my cute Crocs flip flops!
Before I left for the pedicure, Madison asked where I was going. I said to get my toes painted. Of course, she wanted her toes painted too - so I promised her I would paint them when I got home. Well, when she saw the cute flowers on my toes she had to have them too! So, her toes are painted the same color as mine and each of her big toes have five white dots that, to her, look like flowers. I am, by no means, skilled in nail art!

Weekend Re-cap

So - I have to learn how to take my camera out of the case. I've always believe that if I left it out, I was much more apt to grab it and snap a few pictures. I recently put it where it goes and I'm taking a lot fewer pictures as a result!

So - last weekend was our first full weekend at home in a long time. For once, we didn't have any plans or anywhere to be. So - what did we do??? We worked. We worked our little tails off for the entire weekend. We managed to sneak in a few snippets of fun as well.

My drapes are hung. YAHOO! I still have to find a curtain rod to hang the scarf - but at least my neighbors can't see in my windows anymore.

Mike power washed the house, the patio furniture, the garage, and just about anything else that you can shoot high pressure water at. It's so nice to have everything looking so clean!

I scrubbed grout all weekend. YUCK. In fact, I even have a bit more to do but I ran out of Magic Erasers. In my opinoin, Magic Erasers are the only cleaning product you will ever need.

On Saturday we decided to go for a bike ride. The weather was quite nice despite strong winds. Our neighborhood is very hilly and makes for some huffing and puffing as you go. Everytime we were stuggling to ride up hill Madison would start to sing "Up the hill, up the hill, up the hill." In the cutest little voice ever. Eventually Mike got tired of struggling up the hill and turned around to her and said "easy for you to say" as she road quite comfortably in her trailer. She didn't really understand what he was getting at!

Madison and I made home made popsicles on Saturday. On Sunday I promised her a popsicle after her nap. The first thing she asked for when she woke up? A popsicle! Of course, no matter what I tried, I could not get the popsicles to come out of their mold - so we had to drive to the grocery store on an emergency popsicle run. Madison was a kid on a mission! In her cute pink dora crocs with capris and a t-shirt and pink sunglasses; she went tearing through the store in search of popsicles. I heard more than a few chuckles as I chased after her and helped her choose a box. I think we will be sticking to store bought popsicles from now on.

All in all, it was a great weekend. We were completely beat by the end of the day Sunday. In fact, I think we were all in bed and asleep by 9 pm!

A story that I have been following...

I have posted on this topic at least twice in the past year. It was a story that really touched my heart and I have prayed often for the Mission Viejo couple that lost all three of their children in a tragic traffic accident last May. How aweful it must have been to go home to an empty and quiet house following the funerals for the three children. I just couldn't imagine it. Then in October came the bittersweet news that the couple were expecting triplets! To me, it was as if God knew their three children weren't supposed to be taken that day last year. Though the triplets could never replace their three children they were blessed the two girls and a boy, just like they had before. Today, I found this happy article from the OC Register:

Triplets born to Ladera Ranch couple whose 3 children died last year
Two girls and a boy born Wednesday night at Mission Hospital.

MISSION VIEJO – A Ladera Ranch couple who almost one year ago lost three children in a freeway crash announced the birth of triplets – two girls and a boy – born late Wednesday.
The babies were born within minutes of each other. The first baby girl named Ashley was born at 9:42 p.m. weighing 3 pounds, 8 ounces. Then a minute later came Ellie, weighing four pounds, and their brother Jake weighing 3 pounds, 14 ounces was born at 9:44 p.m. The babies are in the care of Children's Hospital at Mission and are listed in good condition. They were born by C-section. Lori Coble is in good condition, said Denise Almazan, spokeswoman for Children's Hospital of Orange County.
In October Lori and Chris Coble found out that triplets – two girls and a boy – were expected to come into their lives in May.
"It's kind of a two-sided coin," Chris Coble, 36, said then. "We feel amazed that it's happening, but at the same time we're still mourning Kyle, Emma and Katie. Nothing will ever replace them. We feel joy for what's happening, but we're crying and missing the kids."
The Coble children – Kyle, 5, Emma, 4, and Katie, 2 – died after a big-rig loaded with more than 40,000 pounds of electronics struck the family's Chrysler minivan May 4 on the I-5 in Mission Viejo. The minivan was stopped in the slow lane. Lori Coble, 30, who was driving, and her mother, Cynthia Maestri, 60, were injured.
After the children died, the community of Ladera Ranch rallied around the couple. Fundraisers were held, and more than 100,000 pink and blue ribbons were wrapped around trees and light poles throughout south Orange County. The children's pictures were posted almost immediately on lifetomotion.com. People from more than 1,000 cities around the world sent e-mails to the Cobles.
Lori and Chris Coble have been focused on adding to their family since the crash took their children. From the minute they were married seven years ago, they couldn't imagine life without children.
Throughout the year neighbors and Ladera residents didn't let the Cobles out of their thoughts. As the anniversary of Kyle, Emma and Katie's deaths drew near - along with the impending birth of the triplets – the community held the couple in their hearts and prayers.
"There has not been a day that has gone by that I have not thought of the Coble family," wrote Ann Berger, a Ladera resident, in response to a Register online request for reader input. "May 4th of last year, I was on dismissal duty at my school, Oso Grande, when we were told that parents would be late picking up their kids because of an accident on the freeway. I had not idea then how life in Ladera would change and how what happened to the Coble kids would impact my family. My daughters, Allie, 6 and Erica, 4, and I pray for them everyday. When we say grace Erica always follows it up with 'God bless Emma, Katie and Kyle.' We also have continued to pray for their new baby sisters and brother."
"I was very encouraged when I heard Lori was pregnant," Steve Wright, pastor at Village Presbyterian and nearby Coble resident said earlier this week. "It made me happy. Here's a mom and dad who are fantastic parents and now will have another outlet for that love. The children they will have are lucky to have parents like Chris and Lori."
(Staff writer Salvador Hernandez contributed to this report.)

Happy news indeed. I'm glad to hear that all children are doing well. The babies seem to all be of nice size for triplets. I'm happy that this couple will soon have the sounds of children in their home again.
